So many services, so little time

The title is a bit misleading, I’m basically bitter about social media in all its aimless entirety – not just Twitter, and of all the social media options out there Twitter is the only one I am still actively using (but since I liked the sound of Bitter About Twitter I stuck with that as the title of this post).

Though, to be truthful, to say that I am “actively” using Twitter is also misleading. I occasionally post some random comment or link, but if we average out the frequency of my Tweets then it is barely a weekly let alone a daily activity.

What’s my Beef?

Sometimes it seems like everyone uses social media. Prospective clients often approach me to ask if I “do” social media; at lunch and learn sessions or other meet-ups it is assumed that as someone whose work relates to the worldwide web I must know and understand Facebook, LinkedIn and now Pinterest – and that I am nothing short of a guru with an intimate understanding of the Facebook timeline or whatever else is flavour of the month.

Actually I don’t and I increasingly dislike social media. It’s just all so time consuming and huge quantities of what passes for content in the world of social media can be pretty pointless. [Read more...]
